Norquay citizens are...

Respectful, Responsible, Kind and Safe

 

Mission statement:

Norquay School seeks to enable students to become lifelong learners and valuable citizens in a learning environment supported by teachers and parents.

 

These expectations apply to behaviour at school, during school-organized or sponsored activities, and behaviour beyond these times (including on-line behaviour at school) that negatively impacts the safe, caring or orderly environment of the school, and/or student learning.

 

 Norquay students are respectful

  • Use good manners (please / thank you)
  • Speak politely at all times / No swearing or foul language
  • Listen / Use inside voices
  • Take turns / Say “excuse me”
  • Use words to solve problems
  • Leave others’ belongings aloneBe respectful of others by wearing clothing appropriate to a place of learning

 Norquay students are responsible

  • Be responsible for your learning
  • Get involved in school activities and be responsible for your part  
  • Be responsible for your behaviour, do not blame others for your actions
  • Think before you act
  • Be on time
  • Do your homework, return library books, bring gym strip, take notices home
  • Be hardworking and allow others to work
  • Be responsible for the environment

Norquay students are kind and caring

  • Smile
  • Encourage others to try
  • Be friendly, include others in play
  • Be helpful to your teachers and others
  • Think before you speak...are your words helpful or hurtful?
  • Remind others to be kind
  • Stand up for what is right

Norquay students are safe

  • Walk inside the school, in the halls and in the basement
  • Go outside to run and play running games
  • Stay on the school grounds
  • Play in play areas (not in the washroom or hallways or stairs or at the front of the school)
  • Keep hands and feet to yourself
  • Follow classroom rules
  • Report strangers
  • Leave valuables or harmful items at home
  • Leave “wheels” at home
  • Ask an adult for help if you need help and are unable to solve the problem yourself
  • DO NOT bring real weapons or toy weapons to school.
  • DO NOT bring cell phones into the classroom
  • Follow safety guidelines when using the internet

How Parents and Guardians Can Help

  • Inform school of personal crises that may influence your child’s behaviour.
  • Spend time reading and talking with your child each day.
  • Discuss the school’s Code of Conduct as a family.
  • Help your child to understand that we aim to live up to the code at school and when participating in school events in the community.
  • Help your child to be as independent as possible, with their lunch, their belongings, their schoolwork

Consequences for "Breaking the Code"

Level 1

  • Staff person will speak directly to the child
  • Student may be assigned a short time out or a detention

Level 2

  • Principal is informed
  • Student completes self-reflection sheet
  • A consequence is assigned
  • Parent signs self-reflection sheet

Level 3

  • Same as Level 2
  • Parent/guardian is contacted
  • Further action is considered

*As students move through successive grades and development levels, they are expected to demonstrate increasing personal responsibility.

Level 4

STUDENT SUSPENSION AND EXCLUSION POLICY

Student Suspension & Exclusion Policy

  • In accordance with the School Act, the Vancouver School Board Trustees authorize the principal to suspend a student from attendance at school for five days or fewer.
  • because a student is wilfully disobedient to a teacher or to any other employee of the Board carrying out responsibilities approved by the Board; or
  • because the behaviour of the student has a harmful effect on others, e.g. name calling or physical fighting, acts of bullying
  • vandalism to school, student or staff property.
  • The authority to suspend students is given to the Principal and Vice- Principal.
  • The Parent or Guardian will be asked to return with their child to discuss the behaviour and the commitment to improve behaviour.
  • The school will treat seriously behaviour or communication that discriminates based on race, colour, ancestry, place of origin, religion, marital status, family status, physical or mental disability, sex or sexual orientation (prohibited grounds set out in the BC Human Rights Code).

Please note that if there is a violation of a very serious nature suspension will be immediate.  Parents/Guardians are contacted by phone or letter.
