Internet Safety

Many children are being left unsupervised in a place where parents think they are safe – on the internet. Do you know what your child is doing on the computer? Is the computer in your child’s bedroom? Are they talking on chat lines? Many incidents of internet bullying occur daily. Some have come to our attention at school.

Safety Checklist - Please go over these guidelines:

1.

Turn on the computer and ask your child to show you where they’ve been. Look at the History part of your browser. Talk about the sites.

2.

Agree on what sites are acceptable.

3.

If they chat on chat lines, agree on these rules:

        a) They will not put their photos on web sites.
b) They will not give out personal information / family name / telephone number / School name / friends’ names.
c) They should not agree to meet someone they talked to on line without parental agreement and supervision.
d) They should not use language on the chat line that is harassing , threatening, or bullying – if your child receives messages like this or is being sexually solicited they should tell you immediately. (Threats can be traced – call the police if this is happening.
